In the case of bedding, it can also help you sleep better! According to a survey conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, about seven in 10 people agree that they get a more comfortable night’s sleep on sheets with a fresh scent. It can be tricky to know how to keep these bulky items clean, and whether it’s something you can do at home. So, we’ve put together these expert tips for caring for your bedding and bath linen.

How often should I wash my towels?

We’d recommend once a week and it’s always good to wash towels at a higher temperature for a better clean. Short, fast, wash settings can make them feel rough afterwards, so use a regular-speed cycle. Towels need to be dried thoroughly after use to avoid bacteria settling on the fabric. Avoid leaving damp towels on the floor at all costs! Woman with towel on head applying lip balm in the bathroom mirror

How often should I wash my duvet cover?

Washing your bedding once a week will remove the build up of sweat, body oil and skin that accumulates each night. Not to mention any leftover crumbs if you're the type who likes to snack while in bed!

What’s the best way to wash my bed sheets?

Hot water helps to kill dust mites and germs that thrive in bedding, so you should use the hottest setting that is safe for the material. Cotton can tolerate hot water whereas sheets made of Polyester blends are best washed using warm water. Sunshine is a natural disinfectant and helps to brighten whites, so hang your sheets outside every couple of months if you can. Finally, ironing your bed linen will not only help to kill any last remaining germs but also makes your sheets feel softer and makes them easier to store.

Can I wash my duvet at home?

Duvets are typically too big for standard size (7kg) washing machines and could result in a poor clean or damage to your machine. However, If you have a large capacity drum (12kg), you may have space to wash your duvet at home. As a rule of thumb, you should fill the drum to no more than 80% of its capacity.  Professional cleaners such as Laundrapp will use specialist solvents to remove any stains which results in a finish superior to what you’re likely to achieve at home. We can also ensure that duvets are thoroughly dried, which prevents mildew. Woman detangling green bedding

What types of duvet and bedding are dry clean only?

This varies based on the care label of the item. Retailers often recommend that you dry clean or carefully hand wash wool, to prevent shrinkage. We’d also recommend dry cleaning silk, which is an extremely delicate material. If there’s no label, you can send the item to Laundrapp and our cleaners will use their expertise to choose the best cleaning method. So you can feel reassured that we are caring for your bedding!

How do I keep my whites really white?

Ensuring you only wash whites with other whites is a good starting point, but doesn’t always stop your linen from going gray. The first step to prevent this is to keep your washing machine nice and clean. Run the drum clean cycle regularly if you have one. Secondly, make sure you invest in good quality washing powder as named brands do tend to give better results than cheap powders.  Avoid the use of chemical bleach on your sheets — it has a chemical reaction to protein stains like sweat that can make those stains appear more yellow. Drying your sheets in the sun is a natural way to bleach them and keep them bright. Bed with white bedding in between white bedside tables lamps

What if I can’t follow these steps at home?

It can be difficult to properly clean, dry out and iron large items at home, especially if you live in a small flat. And sometimes time restraints or bad weather will prevent you carrying out these cleaning tips for bedding and bath linen. Laundrapp can clean all tog ratings, and duvets made of synthetic materials or feather and down. Plus, with our handy collection and delivery service, you won’t need to lug bulky items all the way to your local laundrette.  Woman in bed with coffee looking at Laundrapp on her phone

During this difficult time, it's more important than ever that we do what we can to support those in our communities who are vulnerable and less fortunate than us. Crisis is the homeless charity doing just that, and they’ve launched a new campaign, In This Together, in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Rachel Hevicon, Senior New Business Lead at Crisis, explains why this campaign is so important;

“People who are homeless are hit especially hard by the coronavirus outbreak. But together we can get vital care to vulnerable people. It’s hard to protect yourself from the coronavirus outbreak when you’re homeless. People who are sleeping rough are more likely to suffer from respiratory conditions. They can’t wash their hands. And if someone is sleeping rough or in a crowded night shelter, it’s impossible to self-isolate.”

What is Laundrapp doing to help?

From now until the end of April 2020, Laundrapp will be collecting donations from customers on behalf of Crisis. You’ll see a new category called 'Donate' where you can add a £1 donation to your basket, when you order our most popular products. If you’d like to donate more, you can do so at the Virgin Money fundraising page. Laundrapp will then add an additional 10% on top of all donations received. What services is Crisis providing?

The Crisis frontline staff have adapted the way they work to support members during this time and will be focusing on three key areas: Delivering essential services developed in response to COVID-19: - Crisis is delivering care and wellbeing packs for people who have been sleeping rough or are in isolation. As well as hygiene essentials like soap and hand sanitiser, the care packages contain nutritious foods like tuna and pulses, rice and pasta, and fresh fruit and veg. Whereas the wellbeing packs help individuals care for their mental health. - They are collecting donations of unlocked phones and pay-as-you-go SIM cards to provide to members. This allows Crisis to continue to provide support when it's not safe to do so face to face. - Crisis Chief Executive, Jon Sparkes, has been working with Dame Louise Casey, the Government Rough Sleeping Tsar, to ensure hotel rooms are available to help people off the streets and into safety. Offering emergency core grants to other homelessness services: - Crisis is funding registered charities and local organisations to help them cope with the impact of the coronavirus outbreak. - Thanks to the generosity of supporters, the fund has increased from £250,000 to £1 million. - The team has already delivered 50 grants across the UK. Calling for governments to provide robust support for people facing homelessness: - The charity is asking for funding for local councils so that they can provide temporary housing and care. - The team is campaigning to ensure that governments give support to everyone who needs it, regardless of immigration status. We are only safe when these measures apply to everyone within our communities. - Asking for a longer term solution so that when the outbreak subsides

What can you do to support?

Thanks to the generosity of its contributors, Crisis is already helping 3,000 vulnerable people remotely and has been delivering welfare packs to numerous locations across the country. However, with an end to the lockdown not yet in sight, they need our support to keep going. Any small donation that you can provide to help Crisis and their unsung heroes continue their valuable work, would be greatly appreciated. From now until the end of April, you can donate when you place your next Laundrapp order or via the Virgin Money fundraising page. To help us to do our bit to prevent the spread of Coronavirus, we ask that: ✔ Any customer or household that has had a confirmed case of the virus does not place an order for at least 5 days post-recovery ✔ Customers who test positive for the virus, and have had a collection or delivery within 10 days, notify our customer care team so that we can take the appropriate precautions The steps we are taking:

  Our drivers and our professional cleaners handling your items are: ✔ Continuing to regularly wash and sanitise their hands, and making a concerted effort to only touch/handle items as necessary ✔ Advised to check their temperature before starting each day ✔ Wearing protective gloves and disposing of them ✔ Safely disposing of any used cleaning materials And, as per recent Government advice, any of our employees who have recently been abroad or are showing any symptoms of COVID-19 will be instructed to self-isolate immediately.

Changes to our service

  ✔ When placing an order you can opt for a "contactless collection", by adding instructions in the box labelled "delivery notes". This could be to call you and leave the items on your front step, or to leave the items in a safe place such as with a concierge. Where possible, our drivers will follow these instructions. Please note that Laundrapp will not take responsibility for any lost or stolen items where written instructions have been followed ✔ High-temperature cleaning - should you wish to request any items to be cleaned at a higher temperature than usual (30 degrees), please send us your request by adding instructions in the box labelled "cleaning instructions" and we will do our best to accommodate this. If there are any issues, a member of our customer care team will contact you directly

Our Suppliers and Partners

  ✔ We have advised all of our third party providers/facilities to monitor their workforce closely and self isolate any drivers or staff who have symptoms or test positive for COVID-19. In the meantime, we will continue to monitor and support our third-party providers/facilities through this time as more information becomes available.

Does cleaning 'kill' the virus?

  ✔ According to the latest NHS information, “normal washing of clothes will reduce the risk of germs being transmitted”. Whilst we cannot guarantee 100% protection we will continue to monitor the latest NHS and government advice. In addition, we will continue to adapt our procedures going forward to ensure we are following the most up to date advice possible.

Collection and deliveries

  ✔ The NHS has also said that the risk of transmission from packages is minimal, and are advocating the usage of delivery services for those in self-isolation.

25% off for key workers

  ✔ To recognise our national heroes, we're offering all key workers 25% off until the end of April 2020. Just send an email to customercareteam@laundrapp.com with your work photo ID and your order number after you've ordered and we'll discount 25% off the total straight away. ✔ For now, it is business as usual with our undivided focus on keeping our customers and employees safe. As always our Customer Care Team is available to answer any questions you may have. Should you have any specific requests please do not hesitate to get in touch with us by email at customercare@laundrapp.com, via our live chat in our app or on our website, or by calling +44 (0)20 3608 7405.   Your Laundrapp Team" ["post_title"]=> string(50) "Safety measures in light of COVID-19 (Coronavirus)" ["post_excerpt"]=> string(0) "" ["post_status"]=> string(7) "publish" ["comment_status"]=> string(6) "closed" ["ping_status"]=> string(6) "closed" ["post_password"]=> string(0) "" ["post_name"]=> string(46) "laundrapp-covid-19-coronavirus-safety-measures" ["to_ping"]=> string(0) "" ["pinged"]=> string(0) "" ["post_modified"]=> string(19) "2020-03-25 21:17:01" ["post_modified_gmt"]=> string(19) "2020-03-25 21:17:01" ["post_content_filtered"]=> string(0) "" ["post_parent"]=> int(0) ["guid"]=> string(50) "http://laundrapp.com/?post_type=blog&p=135146" ["menu_order"]=> int(0) ["post_type"]=> string(4) "blog" ["post_mime_type"]=> string(0) "" ["comment_count"]=> string(1) "0" ["filter"]=> string(3) "raw" }
