Top tips for how to decorate a bed

To get a great night’s sleep, dressing your bed in fresh, beautiful bedding looks great and makes you feel relaxed, comfortable and fabulous.

Make it up

A bed never feels as good as when the sheets have just been changed and the duvet cover is clean and freshly ironed. When making your bed, use a mattress protector, tuck your sheet tightly around the mattress and put your duvet on before the pillows. Smooth out all creases and finish with a bed runner for a ‘boutique hotel’ touch. In the morning, always let your bed ‘air off’ (with the duvet turned right down) for at least an hour before making it up again.

Less is more

Scandi bedroom ideas are really popular – and for good reason: natural colours and textures, soft fabrics and organic cotton make for a relaxing environment that looks beautiful. Minimal is key: avoid fluffy blankets, silky sheets or bold prints. Instead, keep things simple with a bed throw and cushion set in natural cotton and nude tones.

Focal point

If you’re looking for cool bedroom ideas for small rooms, let your bed be the focal point. Reversible bedding provides options; add a statement bedspread in autumn for warmth and style; and use mismatched cushions in different sizes and colours for a designer look. You could also use ‘pillow shams’ – decorative cases that change the whole look of your pillow – to create looks to suit different moods.

Pillow talk

Pillows look great when they are plump and covered in crisp, crease-free cases. Choose a pillow that’s suited to the position you sleep in for bedtime, and a couple of chunky pillows to dress the bed when you’re not sleeping in it. Great bedding ideas start with pillow dressing: scatter cushions, or throw pillows for bed decoration and bolsters look cool, particularly if they clash or contrast with your duvet cover design. Just try not to overdo it – you don’t want to spend an hour undressing your bed before you get into it every night.

Stylish bedroom ideas

If you’re looking for inspiration beyond your bedding, consider switching to a beautiful upholstered headboard, choose a statement-making piece of artwork to hang over the bed, or add an unusual bedside table.
