How To Make Your Own Washing Detergent

Your very own step-by-step guide to making your own detergent

Ever wondered how to make your own laundry products? Wonder no more! Whether you want to save a bit of cash or just take on a quirky side project for a Sunday afternoon, here’s a super easy step-by-step guide for making your own customised detergent. It’s guaranteed to leave your clothes clean and fresh, with the scent of your choice!

What you’ll need:

2 bars of soap – any will do, we like Dove for that extra soft feeling

1 cup of soda crystals – available at larger supermarkets

1 cup of baking soda

White vinegar

A few drops of essential oils (you can use any scent, however we like to use Lavender)

Step 1:

First, you need to grate your bars of soap. You can use a normal cheese grater; this will get a little slippery towards the end so watch those fingers!shutterstock_185660735

And don’t forget to wash your grater thoroughly before using it again unless you like the taste of soap!

Step 2:

Pop the soap shavings in a food processor along with the soda crystals. Add in the baking soda and just a few drops of the essential oil you’ve chosen too.

The more you add, the stronger the scent.

Step 3:

Pulse the food processor a few times, running it until you have a very fine mixture. Consistency is key here – don’t blend enough and you’ll have lumps that will stick to your clothes and won’t dissolve.

Blend it too much though and the mixture will reform back into a bar. Aim for a smooth, powdery mixture.

When you’re ready to try out your homemade detergent, you’ll need 2-3 tablespoons of your detergent per load. Just put into the normal tray and add 2 tablespoons of vinegar to your softener compartment. You can use this detergent with any cycle setting on your washing machine for great results.
