How to Fold Your Clothes Perfectly

Folding clothes is one of those chores almost nobody wants to do. It’s time consuming, repetitive and hard to get right – for most people, anyway. Personally, we love folding your laundry and our clothing care teams are experts at all the speedy nuances of it too! That’s why we’ve put together this handy list of tips for folding, so you don’t have to buy a clothes folding board to know how to fold your laundry quickly and precisely.

Of course, the exact method for folding will change based on whether you’re folding t-shirts, shirts, socks or dresses, but with these simple tips you’ll be able to fold everything more efficiently than ever.

Don’t fold silk or synthetic fabrics

It may sound silly, but not all your clothes need to be folded in the first place – especially if you have room to hang them up instead. You’re always better off hanging clothes made of silk or any synthetic fabrics, such as polyester or nylon, but if you’ve got the room then why not hang your cotton t-shirts too?

Always fold your underwear and bras

At the same time, some items always need folding no matter what they’re made from. It may be tempting to invert your socks into a tightly rolled ball, but doing so will just stretch the elastic – so best to just fold them in half. Meanwhile, bras should be hung or laid flat to avoid changing the shape.

Shake it out before you fold it up

This is especially true with fluffy or voluminous items, such as towels. Basically, by shaking out the items before hand you’re both minimising wrinkles and adding volume so that they stay extra soft. Once you’ve smoothed it out, you can fold it as normal for a better finish.

Fold large sheets by halves

Some items, such as t-shirts, need to be folded in a specific way – but large sheets aren’t like that. Shake them out, then fold them in half – then in half again. And again. That’s all they – and a lot of other items need. Keep the folds loose but precise to minimise creases.

Remove creases when you shower

Don’t despair if you unfold your clothes in the morning and find there are few wrinkles that have crept in. You can smooth most of them out without getting out the iron. All you have to do is hang them near your shower and keep the door closed – the steam will take care of the rest.

Of course, if you’d really like to get your folding done quickly then there are some tools out there to help, such as folding boards and t-shirt folding devices – but the quickest way to get your laundry washed and folded is always to leave it to the professionals!
