Filling Time: How to Clean Your Duvet or Quilt

Synthetic fillings, down fillings, trimmings – washing your duvets and quilts can be so complicated that it’s no wonder so many of us have trouble cleaning bedding on a regular basis. Did you know that 35 per cent of Sheffield residents admit they’ve never washed their duvets, for example? That means more of us that we may care to admit are sleeping in piles of bacteria and shed skin – gross!

Thankfully, our professional cleaning teams are experts in this sort of thing and know exactly how duvets and quilts should be cleaned and how to keep them fresh. That’s why we’ve turned to them to offer some much needed advice to Sheffield and the rest of the UK…

How to wash feather duvets
Always check the care label to start with, so you know whether you can try to wash your feather duvet at home or whether it needs professional dry cleaning. The care label should also indicate what sort of filling your duvet has if you’re not sure, which can be useful information if it does need a thorough dry clean.

Washing a feather duvet at home is usually best done on the gentlest setting and at low heat with no spin cycle. Don’t be surprised if the duvet looks darker than normal when you take it out, but be forewarned that feather duvets take a long time to dry. Hang yours somewhere where it can air thoroughly before you use it again.

How to wash synthetic duvets
As always, start by checking the care label in case your duvet requires specialist care or dry cleaning – synthetic duvets are usually easier to clean at home, but it’s always worth checking. Synthetic duvets can be a bit more voluminous than feather duvets too, which is worth considering before you overload your washing machine.

As with feather duvets, synthetic bedding such as hollowfibre should be cleaned on the gentlest setting at low heat of no more than 30 degrees. The difference is that synthetics hold up better to spin cycles, so feel free to give it a medium-speed spin to hasten the drying time without losing too much fluffiness.

How to wash duvets in the bath
If your duvet doesn’t fit in the washing machine then we’d very strongly recommend you arrange a dry cleaning collection so your duvet can be professionally cleaned – but one other option is to hand wash your duvet in your bathtub instead. Don’t try this on duvets marked as dry clean only, however.

Start by half-filling your bath with warm water, then adding double the normal amount of detergent. Next, sit on the edge of the tub and use your (clean) feet to massage the duvet for at least 10 minutes. Empty the tub, rinse it out and repeat with clean water until you’ve got all the detergent out. Gently squeeze the excess water out and hang your hand-washed duvet in direct sunlight until dry.
